training a dog to run on a treadmill

Can I train my dogs to run on a normal treadmill (ie, the one I use?) and how is the best way to do it? so far, i've used treats to get the dog to stand on it, and hung onto the collar, while holdiing a treat infront of his nose (And sort of drip feeding treats) while I had the treadmill on as slow as it would go. but the dogs don't like it, hang back against the collar etc.

suggestions please? or should I just worry about getting them a bit fitter when it cools down a bit? (Obviously the treadmill is inside, where it's airconditioned.
