Tick Management/Protection

We will be moving to a new property soon and we have already discovered that ticks are an issue due to the kangaroos etc that are in the area (this is in WA).

I was wondering what people use to protect their dogs against ticks, besides obviously physically checking them.

There are different types of ticks, is it the paralysis tick that is a concern in the area you are moving to?
We live in a high tick (paralysis tick) area and we use Advantix, I have heard a permoxin wash is also good.
In a high tick season we do not walk our dogs near creeks or where there is high grass.

I am based in WA so we don't get the paralysis ticks over here luckily. I would just prefer to have an idea of what has been successful for those who have dealt with this issue. I was looking at the Advantix but thought there might be better options.
